Brook Joyner/CNN New York — TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, reached a $400 million settlement with the US Justice Department over children’s privacy litigation on Friday, one of the largest amounts yet for a case of this kind.
Friday’s settlement is “one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a COPPA case,” a press release from the Justice Department said.” Since the lawsuit, TikTok has implemented a number of changes, including “extensive measures designed to strengthen safeguards for younger users, improve age-related controls, and enhance parental oversight,” the Justice Department said in the press release.
