Ms Birdi, a former nominated MP, made history as the first Kenyan Asian woman to serve in the national legislature.

According to Article 127 of the Constitution, the PSC shall consist of the Speaker of the National Assembly, as the chairperson, seven members appointed by Parliament and one woman and one man appointed by parliament from persons who are experienced in public affairs but are not Members of Parliament.

The vacancy follows the expiry of a six-year term for former Kakamega Woman Representative Rachel Ameso Amolo, who joined the commission in June 2020 as a non-MP commissioner, replacing Dr Lorna Mumelo.
