ANALYSIS: Osun 2026: Rauf Aregbesola, ADC’s litmus test

By GhanaSummary NewsroomNigeria

Mr Aregbesola’s perceived waning political capital in the state aside, the ADC does not have strong institutional support, organisational depth, mass appeal and the financial clout the likes of AP and the APC enjoy in the state, which are key determinants that drive election victory or loss, as the case may be.

Mr Aregbesola was a pillar of the APC in Osun State until a bitter struggle for the control of the party in the state with his successor, Gboyega Oyetola, on one hand, and his estranged political godfather, President Bola Tinubu, on the other hand, made him part ways with the party in July 2025, before emerging as the national secretary of the ADC.

However, Mr Aregbesola’s diehard loyalists, who are spread across the state, believe it will be political hubris for the AP and the APC to deny his influence in the state where he was governor for eight years, with an extensive grassroots network of foot soldiers who are always ready to do his political bidding, come rain, come shine.
