Africans favour China over Trump’s US in latest Pew poll
Even in Ghana, the only country to still harbour more positive views towards the US than China (68% versus 64%), more respondents have confidence in President Xi Jinping to do the right thing than President Trump (56% versus 54%).
Unsurprisingly, the US polls particularly poorly in South Africa, where Trump’s false accusations of a “white genocide” and cuts to foreign aid have seen positive opinion of the US collapse from 49% to 35% over the past two years.
Public opinion has flipped in Kenya and South Africa, with China now ahead of the US, while Beijing has widened its pre-existing lead in Nigeria from 3 percentage points to 15 (78% of polled Nigerians now have a positive view of China versus 63% for the US).
