- Alexis Sanchez rejects loan move to AS Roma over wage issues
- The Chilean became the highest paid player after joining Man United in 2018
- Sanchez has only managed to score five goals in the last 18 months at Old Trafford
Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez has reportedly turned down a chance to join Serie A side AS Roma before this transfer window closes.
The Chilean forward joined the Red Devils from Arsenal to become the club's most paid at Old Trafford. However, his return on his investment has been below expectations so far.
Since joining the club in January 2018, he has managed five goals and nine assists in 45 appearances in all competition.
Daily Star however reports that United are hoping they can ship the striker who earns about £400,000-a-week out of the club this summer.
According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Roma were close to nicking a deal with the Premier League club for the player to join them on loan for the season.
But the former Barcelona striker turned down the deal because the club would only pay half of his wages during his loan spell.
Palmeri tweeted: "Manchester United reached an agreement with Roma for a straight loan of Alexis Sanchez as Roma would have paid half of his wages at €9.5m per year, but the Chilean refused the transfer."
Sanchez will now compete with Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Daniel James for a place up front at Old Trafford.
And United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is nearing a return to first-team action after competing in the Copa America over the summer.
"Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard,” Solskjaer said.
"And he wants to be a part of this and it's these stories he's again that he's been put in the reserves, of course he hasn't.
"He's a part of our squad and a very, very good player. He's had three weeks now, he's a few weeks behind the rest but he's close to being part of it.
"We don't have the biggest forward line in numbers, so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect, because we expect him to come good at this club, he's quality.
"We've had a behind closed doors game, and he's training, he's doing a little bit of extras, he'll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time, but we'll have more behind closed doors games.
"With one game a week now, it's hard to keep players ticking, so we're arranging a few of them.”
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that transfer window and much has been expected of him.
But the Chile international has failed to live up with the billing and has been one of the worst high-profile transfer in recent memory.
The 31-year-old has made just 45 appearances, scoring five goals in over 18 months since moving to the Theatre of Dreams.
