- The central bank will be using about 5-months to destroy new Ghana cedi notes which were printed under erstwhile John Mahama’s government
- According to him, some of the notes are brand new in containers which are yet to be cleared from the port
- A Plus has become a strong critic of the NPP and Akufo-Addo led administration
Comedian Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has alleged that the Bank of Ghana wants to destroy new currency notes which were printed under erstwhile NDC government.
In a Facebook post, he said some of the cedi notes are brand new in containers which are yet to be cleared from the port.
He said the Central Bank has already spent a week destroying new cedi notes printed by the previous government and are bent on destroying even more.
“The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has already spent one-week destroying new cedi notes printed by the previous government but has not succeeded in destroying 10 per cent of the total sum which has to be destroyed,” A Plus wrote.
In May 2018, the BoG issued an upgraded and security-enhanced banknotes of the Ghana Cedi.
A statement from the Central Bank said the new banknotes will have enhanced security features in line with evolving changes in the technological. landscape.
It further stated that the exercise is meant to strengthen the currency against faking and counterfeits.
A Plus wondered why every government prints new currency notes when they come to power, while bemoaning the cost involved.
“Why is it that every government prints new notes.....You will not believe the cost of printing these notes.....It can build schools and hospitals for many deprived communities.
“Why do we take our money, give it to white people to print new money, only to change the design and destroy them.....Why does every government design and print new notes.....I don't understand it?” he added.
