A pullout advert from the Daily Graphic sighted by YEN.com.gh points to the fact that as many as two betting companies in Ghana have either been suspended or are without a licence for operating in the country.
The Gaming Commission of Ghana has notified the general public that some betting companies have either been suspended or told to back down because they no licence for operating in the country.
In the full page ad in the Daily Graphic on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, the commission said "LORD OF THE BET, trading as LOLLIBET, has not been issued with a gaming licence.
As such, LOLLIBET CANNOT OPERATE any games of chance in the country".
Lollibet is a betting enterprise that has operated for about one year in Ghana. But it started having issues in paying its customers who won betting on sports events offered by the company.
On the part of Safaribet, the commission said, "AFRICAN GAMING AND ENTERTAINMENT , trading as SAFARIBET SPORTS BETTING, can no loner operate any games of chance in the country until further notice."
The caution continued: "Anyone who deals with SAFARIBET SPORTS BETTING does so at their own risk and the COMMISSION would not be liable in any event".
The case against Safaribet may have stemmed from a complaint made against them by Theophilus Morgan, a punter who won about GHC 57 million but who money was never paid.
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that in November of 2018, Morgan won GHC 57 million from sports betting company Safaribet, but at all despite a warning from the Gaming Commission.
Morgan had petitioned the Gaming Commission, the body responsible for supervising the activities of all betting companies in Ghana, to intervene.
In a letter to Safaribet, the commission instructed the bookies to pay Morgan the GHC 286,000 (260,000 plus a bonus of 20,000) they claimed he legitimately won, while investigations continued.
But Safaribet never obliged.
