‘I speak Twi’ – Belgian star Jeremy Doku embraces Ghanaian roots amid International success

Manchester City’s dynamic forward, Jeremy Doku, sheds light on his Ghanaian heritage while excelling on the international stage for Belgium.

Originally hailing from Antwerp with Ghanaian lineage, the 21-year-old phenom launched his international journey with Belgium’s youth squads, showcasing his talent from U-15 to U-21 levels.

Despite overtures from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Doku opted to represent Belgium’s senior team, making his debut in a UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark in September 2020.

His prowess shone brightly in Euro 2020, where he amassed 20 caps and netted two goals for the European powerhouse.

Reflecting on his Ghanaian roots, Doku proudly acknowledged his parental heritage, even revealing his proficiency in Twi, a language steeped in Ghanaian culture.

“Of course, I’m Ghanaian because my parents are Ghanaians.

I’ve been there once, and I’ll have to go back there again because it was a long time ago,” Doku shared on the In The Premier League Chair show.

Doku’s journey took a new turn when he joined Manchester City from Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennes last summer, impressing under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

As a versatile attacker, he has notched five goals and provided eight assists for the club, showcasing his immense talent and potential on the grand stage.
