“The country expects even more all the time”- Ghana captain Andre Dede Ayew

I was part of this team with a generation (Essien, Muntari).

Then we had the generation with Wakaso, Gyan, and John Mensah.

Now there is a new generation coming,” said Dede Ayew.

The forward was part of the Claude Le Roy set-up that competed in the 2008 AFCON as a youngster.

Despite this generation that dominated, we still couldn’t win.

So, it creates more pressure and more demands, and the country expects even more all the time.

“Today, players do not have the experience that these players I just mentioned have or had.

“The players start by getting used to it, by understanding what wearing this jersey means, this jersey means a lot to millions of people,” added Ayew.

Playing for Ghana has always come with immense pressure because every Ghanaian growing up knows the country has won and won in previous years.

This puts the players under pressure so wearing Ghana’s jersey is a huge task.

“The jersey is very heavy to wear and you have to have broad shoulders.

But, we will get through this, and I am sure of it.” Ayew concluded.

The skipper expressed his optimism that Ghana will get back to its best because the team has been suffering for quite a long time.

Ghana returns to competitive action in June against Mali and Central Africa in MD3 and MD4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In six games played in 2024, Ghana is yet to record a single win.
