Ghana Mourns: Iconic sports broadcaster Joe Lartey passes away at 96

The renowned Ghanaian football commentator and journalist, Joe Lartey, fondly known as “Over to You,” has passed away, as confirmed by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

Lartey, born on June 6, 1927, in Accra, Ghana, breathed his last on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the age of 96.

He began his remarkable journey in journalism at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in 1961, where he quickly became a beloved figure in sports commentary.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lartey made a significant impact on the Ghanaian sports scene.

He played a pivotal role as the inaugural president of SWAG and hosted iconic programs like Sports Digest on GTV.

His influence extended beyond Ghana’s borders, earning him prestigious awards such as the “A Life in Sport” accolade from the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 2022.

Lartey’s legacy as a trailblazer in sports broadcasting continues to resonate deeply with fans and colleagues, both locally and internationally.
