President John Dramani Mahama on March 13, 2025, relieved the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, of his post.

He has appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and the Council of State, made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.

Following the viral announcement of the new appointment, social media users have expressed mixed reactions to the change within the Ghana Police Service.

Some users believe that the President should not have dismissed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), while others welcomed the new development.

"Felix's statement didn’t clearly communicate that the IGP had been dismissed. It immediately named a replacement. Plus, Dampare is not 60, he’s not due for retirement. Those who are close to retirement are usually asked to proceed on leave pending retirement,” one user commented.

Another praised Dampare’s leadership, "Dampare will go down in history as one of the best things that happened to our police service. He certainly didn’t get everything right, but he made us feel safe when it mattered."

However, some users believe removing Dampare was a mistake, "Sacking Dampare as the IGP will be the biggest mistake of John Mahama’s government."

Others questioned the rationale behind the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu, "He is 59 years old, meaning he will serve for just a year. Why didn’t the President appoint someone younger? To me, I don't think Dampare did anything wrong in the past eight years, but I stand to be corrected if he has."

Some users blamed Dampare for his dismissal, citing his alleged delays in handling critical investigations, "Dampare should blame himself for losing his job due to procrastination.

“The Secretary to the President wrote to him nine weeks ago, requesting an expedited investigation into election-related deaths, but he has since refused to submit the report."

Others claimed that Dampare’s leadership was unpopular among some police officers, "I have police friends, and the way they complained about Dampare would shock you. No doubt they voted the NPP out. There’s a lot going on unless you're close to them."

"They’re jokers. Dampare doesn’t deserve any public sympathy."

Another user acknowledged his contributions, "Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is no longer the IGP, as he has been replaced. You served well."

"I see that a new IGP has been appointed by H.E. John Dramani Mahama. Again, I see many voices crying out about why Dampare shouldn't have been replaced. Let it be known that he was lucky not to be booted out earlier. Mr. Yohuno, we’re watching."

However, some insisted that no replacement could match Dampare’s leadership, "No IGP would be better than Dampare!"

Another user defended the President’s decision, "Alright, folks, the President has decided that he no longer requires the services of Dr. Dampare as the IGP. He is well within his rights to do so, and no one can begrudge him for making that decision."

"Why are we being hypocrites? That’s how things are done. Nothing is changing, he’ll also be fired when power changes. How Dampare thought he was going to be retained beats me. They should drop the case and let Ghanaians move on."
