‘Daa, we are burning’ – Man recounts wife’s heartbreaking final words as fire kills family of four

“She called me at dawn at 3:30 AM. What I heard was, ‘Daa, we are burning, we are burning. We are burning.’ I asked: ‘Is there no one to help you?’ The call dropped. I called again, but there was no response.”

These were the haunting final words of Linda Agyemang, a 33-year-old nurse at Kumasi South Hospital, to her husband before she and their three children perished in a devastating fire at their home in Gyinyase, Asokwa Municipality, on Saturday.

Her husband, who works in Bibiani, was helpless miles away as his family fought for their lives.

“I ran to the roadside to find a car to Kumasi, but because it was dawn, it was difficult. When I finally arrived, my wife and three kids were gone. They were burnt. They were all I had. I have no friends. The joy my last born had, rushing to see me whenever I came home from Bibiani, always gave me joy. What am I going to do?” he said, breaking down in tears.

A Night of Horror

Linda and her three children—Lordina Agyemang, 10, Ivan Agyemang, 13, and Ebenezer Afriyie, 3—were trapped inside their three-bedroom house as flames engulfed the building. Neighbours and passersby made frantic attempts to rescue them, but the intensity of the fire made access impossible.

Firefighters were alerted and arrived at the scene, but by the time they managed to douse the flames, the victims were found burnt beyond recognition in the bathroom, where they had sought refuge.

Three other occupants of the house were rescued and are currently receiving treatment at Kumasi South Hospital.

Authorities Investigate the Cause

The charred bodies of the deceased have been transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for preservation, while authorities have begun investigations into the cause of the fire.

Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, DO II Peter Addai, confirmed the tragic incident.

“At 4:36 AM on 8 February 2025, we received a distress call reporting a fire at Gyinyase near Tubi Hotel. We quickly dispatched our fire tenders to attend to the fire. When we got there, the fire was wild, so we called for a second team to assist. We lost four people in that fire, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

The Gyinyase community remains in shock and mourning, as residents struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss of a mother and her young children.
