Minority MPs followed Afenyo-Markin’s instructions during Jan. 30 chaos – Ahiafor

Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has revealed that Minority MPs were instructed by their leader, Afenyo-Markin, to take certain actions during the chaotic scenes on Thursday, January 30.

Giving his account before the Committee investigating the incident on Wednesday, Ahiafor condemned the conduct of the Minority MPs, expressing his surprise at their behaviour.

He recalled hearing the Minority Leader instructing members to bring people into the vetting room, followed by several individuals entering shortly after. Ahiafor also revealed that Afenyo-Markin was particularly harsh towards the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Shaib, during the session.

“I heard the Minority Leader asking that some people be called into the vetting room, and soon after, I saw people walking in. On that day, the Minority Leader was very harsh to the second Deputy Whip, Jerry Shaib. I’m not going to repeat the words used against him,” Ahiafor said.

He went on to state that it became clear to him that the Minority MPs were following instructions from their leader, Afenyo-Markin, to disrupt proceedings.

Ahiafor also recalled how the Minority Leader ordered the microphones to be turned off, contributing to the disruption of the vetting process.

“I couldn’t fully understand their intentions,” he added. “Before I knew it, someone spoke in Twi, and they started pulling cables. Chaos ensued, and the entire room became hostile. I was left astonished by what unfolded, just sitting there and watching them.”

The Special Committee continues to investigate the incident that led to the disruptions during the ministerial vetting session.
