Joe Wise proposes Afenyo-Markin for minority leader in 9th parliament

Joseph Osei-Owusu, commonly known as Joe Wise, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has proposed a strategic shift in leadership within Parliament.
In a recent statement, he suggested that the outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, take on the role of Minority Leader in the 9th Parliament, particularly in light of the significant defeat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) experienced in the 2024 general elections.
Osei-Owusu, who has long been involved in Ghanaian politics, highlighted the importance of experience and longevity in leadership positions. “Afenyo-Markin has proven himself as an effective leader.
His continued service in Parliament will only contribute to the strength of the political landscape, especially now, when we need someone with his expertise to guide the minority,” Osei-Owusu said during a recent interview.
He reflected on the career trajectory of Afenyo-Markin’s predecessor, Osei Mensah Kyei Mensah, who successfully transitioned from Minority Leader to Majority Leader.
“Kyei Mensah’s journey in Parliament is a testament to the benefits of experience and sustained leadership. This is the kind of progression that strengthens the political party and Parliament as a whole,” Osei-Owusu added.
The suggestion comes at a crucial time, as the NPP is set to establish the minority faction in Parliament following the NDC’s defeat.
Osei-Owusu expressed his reluctance to see a newcomer replace Afenyo-Markin in the minority leadership role.
“Introducing a new face into such a significant position could disrupt the balance we’ve worked so hard to achieve.
We need someone who understands the intricacies of Parliament and can navigate the challenges ahead,” Osei-Owusu explained.
