2024 Polls: Kufour urges Ghanaians to give Bawumia a chance as leader

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor passionately reiterated his belief that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the leader Ghana needs at its critical juncture in interview on Asempa FM.
Describing him as “a man of destiny,” Kufuor urged Ghanaians to give Bawumia a chance, underscoring his credentials and leadership qualities. Kufuor’s support isn’t just a product of personal admiration but stems from years of closely working with Bawumia, whose political journey was first ignited by Kufuor himself.
Bawumia entered Ghana’s political arena in 2008 when Kufuor, then President, appointed him as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo.
His selection was a strategic move aimed at bringing fresh perspectives to the table—Bawumia, an economist and banker with international experience, brought credibility to the party’s economic platform.
His impressive intellectual background, paired with his northern roots, was seen as a perfect match to balance the ticket and appeal to a wider voter base. Although relatively unknown at the time, Bawumia quickly made his mark through his articulate advocacy for sound economic policies, particularly during the 2012 election petition, where he emerged as the lead witness, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail and his capability under pressure
Kufuor, who has known Bawumia personally for years, continues to express confidence in his abilities. During an endorsement video at the NPP’s manifesto launch in 2024, Kufuor highlighted Bawumia’s innovative mindset, particularly his commitment to digitizing Ghana’s economy. He believes Bawumia is “cut for the occasion” and capable of transforming Ghana’s economic landscape. “Bawumia is a man of destiny,” Kufuor emphasized, hoping that Ghanaians would recognize Bawumia’s dedication and vision for a prosperous future
Bawumia’s rise within the NPP has been meteoric, serving as vice president in the two most recent terms under Akufo-Addo. His tenure is often hailed as one of the most impactful in Ghana’s history, particularly in areas of financial digitization and banking.
For Kufuor, this is merely the beginning of what he believes will be a transformative leadership era for Ghana, and his call for Bawumia’s presidency speaks volumes about his unwavering faith in the politician’s potential to lead the country toward a prosperous future.
