Parliament dominated the headlines this week after it announced plans to construct a new 450-seat chamber for the legislators.

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu speaking on the issue said the project will not cost more than $200 million and will provide enough space in the chamber for backbenchers to be positioned well to catch the attention of the Speaker, improve security arrangement and allow for the swearing in of elected Presidents in Parliament since the current chamber doesn’t meet those purposes.

The project which is being designed by renowned Ghanaian architect David Frank Adjaye, same designer of the National Cathedral has been greeted with backlash from Ghanaians with several campaigns on social media with the hashtag “Dropthatchamber”.

Due to protests over plans for a new chamber, Ernesto Yeboah and two others got arrested yesterday when they disrupted sitting to vent their anger. The three have been released on bail but the campaign still continues as civil society groups and Ghanaians plan to protest on July 13.

Other issues to be touched on will be the rampant attack and assault of journalists in the country by security personnel. Two ModernGhana journalists and an Editor of Peace FM who were arrested recently over allegations of cybercrime attacks have been discharged by the Accra High Court because prosecutor for the case, Stella Ohena Appiah who is a Senior State Attorney moved an application to discontinue the case.

These and many more trending issues will be discussed in today’s edition of Newsfile on JoyNews.
