Attempts by some senior members of the National Democratic Congress to push an agenda to get former President Mahama elected as Presidential candidate for the party, has been described as nauseating by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boadiako, indicted the NDC by noting that the opposition party should have copied the style of the People’s Democratic Party in Nigeria if they want to become a formidable force in election 2020.
He explained that rather than invest time and resources in resuscitating the political career of former President Mahama, they should look at ways of promoting another candidate who can stand President Akufo-Addo in 2020.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP who is popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, explained that the NDC should take a clue from the PDP in Nigeria who have replaced Goodluck Jonathan with Atiku Abubakar as their presidential candidate.
“We all know how difficult it is for the NDC to learn but it was be a grave sin for them to attempt voting for John Mahama again as their presidential candidate. They know it is a wrong move but I will encourage and force them to elect John again. He brings no competition to the table”, Chairman Wontumi said.
He went on to state that “ the NDC is banking their hopes on a PDP victory but are refusing to see the steps the party have undertaken to become strong. The PDP is being led by a stronger and fresh candidate but the NDC, is going to be led by a loser and his name is John Mahama”.
Linking his argument to historical events, Chairman Wontumi stated that in 1996 when the New Patriotic Party wanted to capture political power, they voted massively for former President John Agyekum Kufuor to replace a fine gem like Prof. Albert Adu Boahen during their internal contest.
Kufuor’s victory during the internal contest, paved way for the NPP’s victory in 2000, Chairman Wontumi added.
For this reason, he urged the NDC not to think about winning the 2020 elections with John Mahama as their leader.
“It is a mistake I will force them to commit. We need John Mahama again to make the NPP’s victory easier in 2020. The emergence of John Mahama would allow us to compare his shameful track record to that of President Akufo-Addo. We would see if the bus branding saga under John Mahama which caused the state to lose money is better than National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program by Nana Addo, designed to provide support and reduce hardships of entrepreneurs.”
