I Haven't Contradicted Bawumia; Ignore Mischievous Reports - MOH PRO
The Ministry of Health has debunked media reports indicating that about one thousand (1000) nurses won't be recruited in May this year.

The statement which is attributed to the Ministry, in a Starr FM Online publication on Wednesday, is seen to be a contradiction of claims by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that about 1000 nurses and unemployed youth will be recruited next month under a government policy to address youth employment.

The policy has one of its models dubbed "Heal Ghana" under the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) which is yet to be launched; a policy which is to supplement other programmes handled by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

Public Relations Officer of the Health Ministry, Robert Cudjoe, who granted an interview with Starr FM, has issued a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com expressing disappointment at the reportage, stressing that it has been "skewed for mischief purposes".

He explained that "Starr FM producer by name Abban called to interview me this morning on some issues within the health sector of which I granted him the request and so went on with the interview. The question had to do with the fact that there is a release by some nurses group that they are opposed to this new policy on health and that they are calling on their members to stay away from it".

In his response, Mr. Cudjoe noted that he said the nurses belong to the Ministry of Health, "in that case, whatever issues that bother their mind, they should seek clarification from the Ministry and not go to the media. I therefore appealed to them to be calm awaiting the details of the policy to its implementation.

"The nurses were claiming that they are professionals and that they won't accept the temporal employment. I then indicated to them that the model is not going to be a substitute for their permanent employment and that, at the expiration of the programme when their clearance is ready, they would move on. It would be done side by side with existing policy. It is only meant to ensure that they don't sit at home after completion of their training but find something doing and to, importantly, gain some skills on their profession".

Speaking further, he added that he made reference to May 1 saying categorically that it is the "day the policy would be launched. Since those who would be engaged would have to go through certain processes and procedures, it is not that they are starting work on the first May. I said May 1 is to be used to launch the policy to be followed by the actual recruitment for them to start working at the health facilities".

He therefore doesn't see how his submissions on the issue contradicts the Vice President's comment about recruitment of nurses, and so the publication is "imbued with mischief".

"...there has not been any day or time since assuming the role of PRO at the Ministry of Health that I have either contradicted my Minister, Deputies, Directors or even any of the statements made by the many agency heads under the Ministry", he asserted.
