Suspended Managing Director (MD) of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) Mr Bennet Aboagye has allegedly been caught in another filthy deal, Today’s investigations have uncovered.
A two-page document intercepted by Today has revealed that Mr Aboagye used his executive position to allegedly increase salaries of some (17) seventeen workers of the company, who were believed to be known members and supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), without the approval of the Board of Directors.
One of the workers (name withheld), who is a known card-bearing member of the ruling NPP whose monthly salary was pegged at GH¢1,889.96, is now receiving a total of GH¢7,332.45 monthly.
The worker who is a first degree holder, Today gathered, replaced one of the long-serving workers with a Master’s degree who was re-assigned by the suspended MD for political expediency.
Another beneficiary worker, who was receiving a GH¢3,686.26, was also now taking home a whopping sum of GH¢8,271.96 as a monthly salary.
The development, according to our sources, has affected the company’s finances.
It also emerged in our findings that since the NPP government took over power, the situation at MMT has nosedived, making the running of the state institution a big problem.
Some aggrieved staff of the company who poured out their frustrations in an interview with Today last week Friday indicated that only NPP loyalists and sympathisers enjoyed the astronomical increase in their salaries.
The development, according to the workers, had created serious disaffection among staff of the company, thereby affecting the operations of the company.
The aggrieved workers alleged that the non-sympathisers of the ruling government had been transferred to areas such as Yendi, Bolgatanga, Tamale, Yeji, Navrogo, Krachi and Wa.
Meanwhile, some senior staff of the company are also raising issues with their remunerations.
According to them, there were workers who had first degrees and masters degrees, yet were receiving higher salaries than some senior staff with the same qualifications.
The workers therefore called on the minister of transport to impress upon the board of directors of the company to address the protracted anomalies in order to enhance a friendly working environment.
Meanwhile, when Today contacted Mr. Aboagye yesterday via phone to cross-check the story, the embattled MMT MD simply said: “I am afraid I can’t speak… I am at a meeting,” and hanged up the phone.
Not satisfied with this response this reporter sent him a text message, but there was no response as of the time of going to press.
Our reporter’s text message read: “My name is Freeman from Today newspaper. I write to seek clarification on the issue that you used your position to increase salaries of some of the workers of MMTL, when you were the MD.”
Today also tried to get a reaction from the Board Chairman of MMTL, who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi South Constituency, Mr. Ahmed Arthur, but all our efforts yielded no positive results.
