Aishetu Ibrahim Promoted To GES Deputy Director
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has promoted Madam Ayishetu Ibrahim, a blind woman, who was barred from heading the Wa School for the Blind to the Deputy Regional Director of Education in Upper West.

Madam Aishetu was chosen for the new role after a competitive interview process.

Madam Aishetu, who resumed duty last month, is now in charge of promotion interviews in the GES regional head office and holds the fort in the absence of the Regional Director of GES, Mr Evans Kpeba.

“I had my appointment letter on 18th May which instructed me to start work on 21st May, so I started work about three weeks ago,” she told the Ghana News Agency on Monday.

“I take instructions from the Regional Director and when he is not there, I am the one who represent him at functions,” she said.

Madam Aishetu, who is also the National President of the Ghana Blind Union, pledged to work harder to pave way for more people with disabilities to appreciate the fact that working in a challenging environment is dependent on one’s knowledge and skills.

Madam Ayishetu, who holds Master's degree in Educational Administration and Management, until her promotion, has been teaching in Wa School for the Blind for the past 20 years.

In 2014, she was initially appointed to head the Wa School for the Blind but was opposed by some stakeholders including the Methodist Church.

GES bowed to intense pressure from the stakeholders and overturned the decision which attracted widespread media attention and public condemnation.
