Investigations by health authorities has revealed that the polio cases identified in the Eastern Region is similar to a strain currently detected in Algeria.
Although the source of the virus is not known, health authorities are activating processes to rollout a mass polio vaccination campaign within the country with plans of synchronizing the efforts with neighboring countries.
The Ministry of Health declared a public health emergency following the detection of a circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in a river in Koforidua on September 19.
Following the declaration, there have been a wide range of heightened surveillance by health authorities to identify the source of the virus.
