Amnesty International Ghana has called for an intense and complete investigation regarding the reported maltreatment of protesters who were arrested during the demonstration against illegal mining, organised by the Democracy Hub.

According to the human rights organization, constant abuse of citizens amid protest could increase the already declining civic space before, during and after the forthcoming general elections, as reported by citinewsroom.com. "That an independent investigation on this matter be immediately conducted and actions taken to ensure that such injustice and inhumane treatment to citizens of the Republic of Ghana does not happen again" the report stated.

Genevieve Partington, Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, during an interview, called for a review of protest laws in the country to secure the protection of the rights of citizens.

She said, "We are requesting a list of all detained protesters and where they are stationed so we can be granted access to them, so they receive the necessary care and basic human rights.
