Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, has expressed concerns about the growing monetisation of Ghana's political landscape.
He noted that while money may not be the sole factor determining electoral success, it often favours individuals with greater financial muscle.
In his view, Ghana's democracy is gradually turning into an auction, where the highest bidder wins, discouraging those who cannot afford to compete.
Speaking at the University of Ghana Alumni Lecture on the theme: "30 Years of Parliamentary Democracy: The Journey Thus Far," in Accra on Thuesday he stated, "Recent studies by CDD Ghana show that it costs approximately $100 million and $693,000 to effectively fund presidential and parliamentary candidates respectively." "As a former practitioner and now a dormant participant, I can say without a shadow of doubt that this is an understatement." By Adwubi Wiafe Akenteng
