Alan Kyerematen, founder and leader of the Movement for Change, has criticised both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their failure to effectively address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
According to Kyerematen, neither party has shown the political will to tackle the menace over the years.
Speaking at an investor forum at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Wednesday, September 18, Kyerematen called for a new wave of leadership willing to take bold steps to address illegal mining and other pressing national challenges.
He expressed deep concern over the environmental and social consequences of galamsey, describing it as an existential threat to the nation. "The two parties have failed to deal substantively with galamsey and this is an existential effect and I don't think that we need, as Ghanaians to take this lightly. "It is time for us to bring into leadership new leaders who have the capacity and the political will to deal with the problem, but that is where the challenge is," he stated.
His remarks come at a time when the galamsey crisis continues to ravage parts of the country, threatening water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods.
