A seven-member mediation committee has been inaugurated by the government to tackle the deadly land clashes in Gbinyiri in the Savannah Region, where weeks of violence have killed dozens and displaced over 50,000 residents.

Chaired by conflict resolution expert Emmanuel Bombande, the committee brings together respected voices from Parliament, faith-based organisations, academia, and civil society.

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, who inaugurated the group in Accra, said the move followed a directive from the National Security Council after the clashes escalated from the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District into neighbouring villages. "The Government of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama expects that you will conduct your duties with impartiality, transparency, and inclusiveness… so that peace and trust can be rebuilt," the minister charged, describing their task as "heavy but honourable." The committee is expected to deliver a roadmap for peace within one month, focusing on reconciliation, safe resettlement of displaced persons, and mechanisms for long-term stability.
