President John Mahama has lauded the Democracy Cup, describing it as "not just a trophy but a national symbol" that embodies the values of Ghana's democratic journey.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday when Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, accompanied by a delegation of sports dignitaries, presented the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to him at the Jubilee House.

The presentation formed part of a symbolic tour of governance institutions and prominent national figures ahead of this year's competition. "This presentation marks the final lap of a symbolic journey that the cup has undertaken," Speaker Bagbin said. "We bring this before you, Your Excellency, as the ultimate custodian of our national unity and the embodiment of the collective aspirations of our people." In his response, President Mahama commended the initiative, saying the link between democracy and sport creates a platform to engage the youth while reinforcing national values. "This cup is not just a trophy but a national symbol," Mahama said. "It is an enduring reminder of our democratic values and our responsibility to safeguard them." The 2025 edition of the Democracy Cup will be staged on Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where Hearts of Oak will face city rivals Great Olympics in the marquee clash.
