The Minori­ty Leader in Parliament, Mr Alexander Kwamena Afen­yo-Markin, has raised concerns about the water crisis faced by residents in the Effutu Municipality in the Cen­tral Region, which has remained unresolved for more than two weeks.According to Mr Afenyo-Mar­kin, the water situation was having a negative effect on every sector of community livelihoods in the municipality and therefore needed to be addressed.The sectors that had been affected by the water crises, Mr Afenyo-Markin said, were the health, education, household, and economic sectors.This was contained in a letter that was addressed to the Man­aging Director of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Mr Adam Mutawakilu, by Mr Afenyo-Mar­kin on Wednesday and copied the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Mr Kenneth Gilbert Adjei."I write to draw your attention to the disruption of water supply in the Effutu Municipality, which has persisted unresolved for more than two weeks," Mr Afenyo-Mar­kin said."As of today, I can confirm that the majority of the commu­nities within the municipality still remain without the supply of potable pipe-borne water.

This prolonged shutdown has creat­ed unbearable hardship for the population of over 140,000, and its effects are being felt across every sector of community life," he emphasised.Mr Afenyo-Markin, in the letter, said that health facilities within the municipality were unable to maintain the minimum standards of hygiene required while the water crisis situation had led to an escalation of the risk of an outbreak of various diseases.Moreover, he pointed out that while secondary and tertiary edu­cational institutions were strug­gling to operate in the absence of safe water, families were also compelled to rely on irregular and costly private water suppliers."Vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, bear the heaviest burden, with basic domestic routine now disrupted," he added.Mr Afenyo-Markin said that the lack of business activities in the municipality due to the water crisis situation had resulted in the loss of income and a wider shut­down of local commerce."The absence of water supply has thus compounded sanitation challenges, heightened the risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseas­es, and is threatening the overall socio-economic well-being of the municipality," Mr Afenyo-Markin said."In light of the above, I re­spectfully request that your outfit provides immediate clarification on the cause of this disruption, and more importantly, when resi­dents should expect uninterrupted water supply to be fully restored," he added. BY TIMES REPO
