Market women in Salaga in the Odododiodoo Constituency in Accra, have expressed frustration over declining business conditions and the lack of communication from authorities regarding the relocation and renovation of their market.

According to the women, the move to a new location has significantly affected their operations, with many struggling to attract customers.

Speaking on the Community Forum with Philip Nii Lartey, an executive of the Salaga Market Women Association, Juliana Naa Amorkor Tettey, highlighted the difficulties they face since being relocated to the London Market.

She noted that the new location has failed to generate the same level of business as their previous spot. "Business here is very slow.

We operate like a local shop because, after we moved from our original location to the London Market, business was not thriving.

The market women who were relocated near the fish market often get customers, but those of us placed behind the gutter struggle to attract business.

We eventually moved here, but there's no parking lot, so we don't get customers from the corporate world.

The only people who come to buy from us are those running local 'chop bars' and small tabletop shops," she explained.

Another market woman, who identified herself as Asantewaa, expressed concerns over the authorities' lack of transparency regarding their future in the market.

She explained that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) had initially promised to relocate them temporarily for market renovations, but seven years later, they remain uncertain about whether they will be moved back to the renovated space. "My main concern is that the authorities came and asked us to relocate temporarily so they could renovate the market, with the promise of moving us back once the work was completed.

This happened during an election period, similar to the current one.

Seven years later, we are still here, but the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) continues to issue tickets to us. "We haven't been consulted or informed about anything.

Our biggest question is: will we be the ones moving back into the renovated market, or will it be given to others?

AMA has never held a meeting to clarify this, so we remain in the dark.

If we are the ones to move into the new market, they should let us know," she added.
