Wontumi TV has issued an unreserved apology to former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public after one of its presenters alleged that the former president was involved in the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
Wontumi TV described the remarks, made by presenter Akyenkwa Nana Kofi Asare on August 9, as "inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our station's values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting." "The comments did not in any way represent the views, position, or policy of Wontumi TV," In a statement signed by the station's management, . "We deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families." The management assured that disciplinary action will be taken against the presenter and that editorial guidelines have been reinforced to ensure all on-air staff "speak only to verified facts and credible records." Reaffirming its commitment to ethical journalism, Wontumi TV added: "We will continue to provide our viewers with accurate, balanced, and respectful content at all times." The station also extended condolences to the families of those killed in the crash and urged "unity and sensitivity in discussing matters of national grief."
