Dr.

Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has criticised the decision to cancel validly cast ballots in disputed areas instead of rerunning the polls.

According to Dr Afari-Gyan, elections in contested areas should be rerun to allow the people's choices to be fully reflected.

He described the cancellation of valid votes as unacceptable and a disservice to the democratic process.

He made these remarks while addressing a forum on the sidelines of the Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Kumasi on Tuesday. "It is not acceptable to cancel out some validly cast ballots in some cases sometimes called wasted votes… It is not the correct thing to do.

When you cancel the ballot, you may be punishing some people for no offence whatsoever.

They have not committed any offence.

The right thing to do is to rerun the election for the people to decide." "The decision is the people's decision, it is not the election official's decision, it is not the judge's decision.

Democratic election is for the people who decide," he stated.   By Hafiz Tijani
