President has announced two major initiatives, the Presidential High-Level Taskforce and the Global Health Governance and SUSTAIN Initiative, aimed at re-aligning Ghana's national budget with health priorities and promoting African leadership in global health decision-making.
Speaking at the opening of the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, he explained that the taskforce would serve as a platform to engage both international and continental partners in reshaping Africa's health governance system. "The Presidential High-Level Taskforce on Global Health Governance is a convening platform to engage global and continental partners to redesign the health governance system for the world we live in now, not the world of yesterday," he stated.
President Mahama also launched the SUSTAIN Initiative (Scaling Up Sovereign Transition and Institutional Networks), describing it as an African-led platform designed to align national budgets with health priorities while mobilising funds from the diaspora and philanthropic institutions. "The launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative… is a bold, African-led platform that will align national budgets with health priorities, mobilise sovereign, diaspora, and philanthropic capital, and foster cross-border learning, innovation, and accountability," he explained.
He extended an open invitation to other African nations and stakeholders to join Ghana in building a health investment ecosystem rooted in equity, purpose, and sovereignty. "I extend an open invitation to all nations represented here: join us in building an African health investment ecosystem driven by purpose, powered by equity, and anchored in sovereignty," he added.
