The Government of Ghana has begun the evacuation of students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding conflict-prone areas, following a surge in violent incidents in the region.
In a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, July 27, 2025, Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized that the move forms part of urgent measures to protect students who have become vulnerable amidst the ongoing conflict. "Further to the statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior announcing the imposition of a curfew in Bawku, Nalerigu and its environs, government wants to stress that… the curfew is intended to create an environment conducive to the evacuation of all students in various educational institutions in affected areas, some of whom have been unfortunately targeted in the conflict," the statement read.
The curfew, effective from 2pm to 6am daily until further notice, was initially announced as a means to enforce peace and reduce tensions in the area.
However, officials now confirm that it also serves to facilitate the safe and orderly evacuation of students caught up in the unrest.
