The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has credited the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government with taking purposeful measures to elevate women's football to the level of national importance.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he stated that the foundations for the Black Queens' recent resurgence were laid by deliberate policy choices and targeted investments under the erstwhile administration.
Assafuah, who serves as Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, pointed out that the recent success of Ghana's women's national team at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations reflects the continuity of those strategic interventions. "While recent support must be acknowledged, this achievement is undeniably built on the foundation laid by the previous NPP's government which took deliberate steps to reposition women's sports as a national priority," Assafuah stated. "It was under the NPP that we witnessed the revamping of the Women's Premier League through structured funding and logistical backing." The Black Queens are set to play in their first Women's AFCON semifinal since 2016 when they face host nation Morocco on Tuesday, July 22 at 19:00 GMT.
Victory would secure a place in the final against either South Africa or Nigeria.
