As part of his tour of the Bono East Region, the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his party's pledge to abolish the controversial betting tax if elected into office.
Speaking to supporters at Nkwabeng in the Nkoranza South Constituency, Mr Mahama emphasized the need for financial discipline among the youth, urging them to make wise use of their winnings from betting. "We will remove the betting tax.
For those who engage in betting, when you win, the government will no longer take a tax from your winnings," he said.
However, he cautioned, "If you win, spend your money wisely.
Don't waste it on unnecessary things-use it to improve your life in a meaningful way." In addition to scrapping the betting tax, the former president also reiterated his party's commitment to removing the E-Levy, a tax that has sparked widespread criticism since its introduction.
Mr Mahama assured that its abolishment would bring significant relief to mobile money users. "We will remove the E-Levy, so when you use your mobile money to make purchases, you won't be charged that tax anymore," he declared.
The NDC's promise to eliminate these taxes is expected to resonate strongly with the youth, particularly those engaged in betting, as they would be able to retain their full winnings without deductions.
The move is also likely to ease the financial burden on mobile money users, offering much-needed relief in a time of economic hardship.
