President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the urgent need for peace in Bawku, describing the restoration of stability in the area as a "national priority." Speaking from the Jubilee House during a courtesy visit by a delegation of Mamprugu Chiefs who had come to congratulate him on his 2024 election victory, President Mahama expressed deep worry over the toll that conflict has taken on the once-vibrant commercial town. "Bawku, once a thriving commercial hub, is now a pale shadow of itself.
Nobody is happy about this situation," the President said, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to address the longstanding conflict.
He praised the Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, for his commitment to peace, saying, "I commend Naa-Yiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, for the concessions you are willing to make in order to see lasting peace in Bawku." President Mahama called on all stakeholders involved in the Bawku conflict to speed up the mediation efforts, reiterating the government's commitment to ensuring a lasting resolution. "We believe that peace in Bawku is a matter of national importance and requires our collective resolve," he added.
