The Director-General (DG) of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afreh Biney, has called for a stronger collaboration between employers and the Trust to maintain a robust pension scheme.According to him, it was employers who provided the Trust with funds monthly to meet its obligations.Mr Biney was speaking at the 2025 Employers' Breakfast Meeting organised by SSNIT to interact with employers. It was on the theme "Strengthening Employer Compliance for Sustainable Pension Scheme through Digital Transformation."The meeting brought together key players in the employment sector to discuss ways of improving employer compliance and strengthening the pension system.Addressing the participants, Mr Biney explained that employers were central to the operations of SSNIT, stressing, "gathered here are captains of industry and major players on the employment side who on a daily basis take responsibility for ensuring that we get some funds coming through SSNIT to enable us attend to the major issues that confront us, that is ensuring income security for the Ghanaian worker."Mr Biney said the mission of the Trust was to provide income security to Ghanaian workers in a way that builds their confidence and encourages productivity."But how is this possible?

It is only possible because of you.

It is only possible because on the 14th of each month, you strive very hard to ensure that having deducted for the prior month, you make the necessary effort to ensure that we get some funds coming through," he said.Mr Biney said globally SSNIT was one of the pension organisations that paid the highest pension.Touching on pension calculations, the SSNIT boss urged employers and employees to consider how their salaries were structured, particularly the ratio between basic pay and allowances."If, for instance, 40 per cent of your monthly earning is in allowances and only 60 per cent is in your basic pay, and you go on pension, you may be thinking that you have dropped from 100 per cent to about 40 per cent," he said.He explained that pensions were calculated based on basic pay, and allowances did not factor into the computation. On the Trust's digital transformation agenda, Mr Biney announced plans to roll out a fully digitised virtual branch by September, to enable employers and workers to access services conveniently at all times."We want an era where you can go onto an app, or a bank website to effect payments.

That is how we want to bring similar convenience to you," he added. The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Employers Association (GEA), Mr Alex Frimpong, in his remarks, lauded SSNIT for the engagement and underscored the importance of employers in the sustainability of the scheme."Employers serve as the umbilical cord between the Trust and employees," he said, and called for intensified public education to address misconceptions surrounding SSNIT's operations.Mr Frimpong said the SSNIT pension scheme was the best form of insurance and urged all workers to enrol on the scheme to enjoy retirement income security. BY KINGSLEY ASARE
