President John Dramani Mahama has described the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities as a national emergency, pledging swift and decisive action to tackle the worsening crisis.   Speaking during a durbar as part of his "Thank You Tour" of the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, the President expressed deep concern over the environmental damage in areas such as Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso."We are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining.

I must be honest, this is a national emergency," he stated.

President Mahama pointed to the severe degradation of forest reserves and the pollution of water bodies, placing the blame squarely on illegal mining-popularly known as galamsey.

He assured the public that the national taskforce would continue its operations aimed at halting these harmful practices in protected areas. "The national taskforce will continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in our forest reserves and on our water bodies," he affirmed.
