The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) has disbursed a total of GH¢23,621,000 to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for the payment of the April and May allowance for all assembly members. The amount constitutes the first tranche of the GH¢100million allocated to the MLGCRA by the Ministry of Finance as a campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama. The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, who disclosed this in Accra yesterday when he briefed the media, said each of the 9,085 assembly members nationwide would receive GH¢1,300 per month to enhance their capacity to monitor government projects and programmes in their electoral areas."The Ministry of Finance has released GH¢ 25,000,000 on June 18, 2025, as first tranche of the allotted funds to the Ministry.

The Ministry(MLGCRA) as of today, Monday, July 14, 2025 has transferred a total amount of GH¢23,621,000, representing allowances for the months of April and May, to all assembly members," Mr Ibrahim explained."Each assembly member is being paid GH¢1,300 per month to enable them to perform their duties effectively and efficiently," he added.According to Mr Ibrahim, the total amount that had been transferred to the assembly members follows a request his ministry made to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to release an amount GH¢100million allocated by the government to ensure the monthly payment of consolidated allowances due assembly members. The allocation of funds to assembly members, he noted, was a fulfilment of the government's manifesto pledge to resource local authorities and enhance service delivery.Additionally, Mr Ibrahim indicated that the initiative was aimed at enhancing the assembly members' capacities and to equip them with financial resources and logistics to deepen monitoring of all government projects and programmes being implemented within their electoral areas, while deepening decentralisation and local governance. This move, he emphasised, would also enable the assembly members to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently in their respective electoral areas. Moreover, Mr Ibrahim said the government was committed to delivering its campaign promises to the people of Ghana with the release of funds to assembly members being a significant step towards resetting the country's governance structure."We shall continue to deliver and ensure adequate transfer of resources and logistics to MMDAs to facilitate effective and efficient service delivery to the people," he assured. BY CYNTHIA ASAMPANA
