Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China to fund the construction of a modern market in Aflao, in line with President John Dramani Mahama's campaign promise during the 2024 general elections.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the grant was secured on the express instructions of President Mahama. "I signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signed for the Chinese Government," Ablakwa wrote.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 7, 2025.

According to Ablakwa, the new market is expected to transform economic activity in the Aflao enclave, boost cross-border trade between Ghana and Togo, and serve as a vital link between the Ho and Lomé markets. "The new befitting modern Aflao market is expected to boost economic activity, link the Ho and Lome markets, and improve livelihoods in an enclave which is a major West African trading hub," he added.
