South Africa coach, Desiree Ellies insists the Black Queens of Ghana are a quality side despite defeating the West Africans in their opening game at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa began the defence of their title with a 2-0 victory over Ghana, thanks to first half strikes from Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe.
However, the Black Queens came close twice in the second half after Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu hit the crossbar with Princella Adubea also missing by inches. "Take nothing away from Ghana, they are still a quality side," she said. "The 15 minutes really could have changed the game if we had conceded but we stuck around and got the result we wanted," she added.
The victory was South Africa's first over Ghana at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. "I think if you go back 2018, we played Ghana, we were physical and we played them again in 2022 and we were physical so we always going to get that and we know what our strengths are.
So we are never going to be messing with people around but if we can move the ball quicker in our movement, that is our strength," she continued.
