The Member of Parliament(MP) for Asunafo North, Haruna Mohammed, is demanding urgent government action to tackle Ghana's escalating youth drug abuse crisis, calling for the establishment of modern rehabilitation centres in all 16 regions to respond to what he describes as a national emergency.
Speaking to Citi News on Friday, July 4, Haruna expressed concern about the limited capacity of existing psychiatric facilities such as Pantang, Accra Psychiatric, and Ankaful hospitals, stating that these institutions are overstretched and lack the resources to cope with the growing number of substance abuse cases.
He called for proactive investment in addiction treatment infrastructure, drawing a comparison with the government's substantial expenditure on sports facilities. "… But we invest so much in the construction of sports infrastructure.
