Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a scathing critique of the Mahama administration's newly launched 24-hour economy initiative, dismissing it as a propaganda-driven campaign aimed at diverting attention from Ghana's current economic challenges.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, July 4, the Effutu MP accused the government of bypassing parliamentary scrutiny in its rollout of the policy. "Their so-called 24-hour economy - on Wednesday, July 2, they launched it without due regard to Parliament," Afenyo-Markin said.
He argued that the policy, though widely touted as a solution to unemployment and underutilized productive hours, is more about optics than substance. "We in the Minority see this as a mere public relations tool to distract from real-time economic hardships and win public goodwill.
Because you just increased tariffs, you have introduced a levy which the people called 'Dumsor Levy'," he added.
