Nearly two months after the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) repatriated over 2,000 undocumented migrants, many are back on Accra's streets, raising fresh doubts about the operation's impact.
On May 16, GIS launched what was widely described as a sweeping crackdown on foreign nationals, particularly women and children, accused of engaging in street begging across the capital.
The operation, which targeted areas such as Nima, Sabon Zongo, Madina, Abossey Okai, Kaneshie, and the Airport Roundabout, resulted in the arrest of 2,241 individuals-909 adults and 1,332 children.
At the time, Head of Public Affairs at GIS, ACI Michael Ofori Atta, stated that all those arrested were to be profiled and repatriated to their countries of origin.
