Deputy Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has called for broader electoral reforms in the wake of the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North Constituency due to disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 7, 2024, General Election.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on July 2, he noted that the situation highlights gaps in how election materials, particularly pink sheets, are handled and safeguarded from polling stations to collation centres.
According to Gibril, the EC's decision sets a necessary precedent and offers an opportunity to initiate reforms that can help the country address similar electoral incidents in the future.
He posits that the incident should prompt a national conversation about credible safeguards for election documentation to prevent abuse and maintain trust in electoral processes. "We made a proposal that this will call for reforms going forward in how we even manage our pink sheets from polling stations to collation centres.
