Legal experts are raising red flags about the growing perception of partisanship and procedural irregularities in Ghana's judiciary following the public address by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.
While some, like Lawyer Musa Ahmed, have openly criticised her for speaking publicly about her ongoing impeachment case, others worry that the situation is exposing deeper issues of judicial accountability, political interference, and a loss of public confidence in the legal system. "Whether or not her actions were legally improper, the real damage is to the reputation of the judiciary," one observer noted. "When the head of the judiciary feels compelled to go public, it reflects a deeper crisis of trust." Lawyer Ahmed did state his disapproval of her conduct, saying, "She must vindicate and validate the law, not seek public sympathy," but beyond individual conduct, there are growing calls for transparent, non-partisan mechanisms to handle judicial misconduct to protect the institution's integrity.
