Embattled Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has raised alarm over what she describes as constitutional and procedural violations in the ongoing efforts to remove her from office, warning that the implications of the process could undermine the independence of Ghana's judiciary and other constitutional bodies.
In her first public statement since the petition for her removal was initiated, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the embattled Chief Justice criticised how the process is being conducted, describing it as a departure from the principles of justice and due process. "Unfortunately, every step of the removal process being undertaken against me is being done in a manner that breaks every rule on how justice is delivered in our country," Justice Torkonoo said.
She expressed concern not only for her circumstances but for the long-term implications of the process on Ghana's democratic institutions. "Though I am in the process alone, the effect goes far beyond me as a person," she stated. "This process will affect how all superior justices and future Chief Justices may be removed from office.
It also impacts commissioners and heads of independent constitutional bodies set up to protect the justice and freedom of the citizens of this country." Justice Torkonoo warned that allowing political or procedural irregularities to dictate the removal of top judicial officers sets a dangerous precedent that could erode public trust and the separation of powers.
