The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manso Nkwanta, Tweneboah Koduah Fokuo, has attributed the growing wave of industrial actions in the country to deepening economic pressures and possible breaches of collective bargaining agreements.
His comments come amid a surge in labour unrest, with various unions, including the Public Services Workers' Union (PSWU) of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, newly posted teachers, and staff of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), declaring strike actions over poor conditions of service.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, June 24, the MP, who doubles as a member of Parliament's Labour Committee, revealed that efforts have been made by the parliamentary committee to mediate and encourage dialogue. "When the issues of the nurses came up, these committees actually came up, had meetings with the unions to try to calm them down, advising them to go by the collective bargaining agreement.
Parliament has been trying, doing its best to get the unions to come to the table and for some negotiations to continue," he said.
