Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, says the government is prioritising irrigation infrastructure as the backbone of efforts to transform Ghana's agricultural sector and ensure sustainable, year-round food production.

Speaking at the 2025 AgriFair held at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park in Accra on Saturday, June 21, and powered by Channel One TV, the Minister declared an end to Ghana's reliance on rain-fed farming.

According to him, the government's new agricultural roadmap under the Feed Ghana Programme places irrigation at the forefront of boosting productivity and stabilising the food supply. "We want to move our agriculture from its current rain-fed status to irrigation agriculture so that we can ensure all-year-round production. "If we can get our farmers under irrigation from January to December, we will be able to sustain a consistent food supply and also keep agro-industries operating without interruption," he said.

The Minister noted that the goal is not only to increase crop yields but also to ensure that agro-processing industries have reliable raw materials to keep operations running year-round. "We are not just thinking about farms, we are thinking about the entire value chain.
