Political aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has disclosed that an overwhelming majority of the 's (NPP) National Council members supported the decision to hold early presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Original TV's Adwenekasa programme on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Tonto revealed that approximately 90% of Council members voted in favour of the proposal during a recent high-level meeting in Accra. "Almost 90 percent of the members of the National Council supported the proposal for early presidential primaries," Tonto clarified, adding that the figure was closer to near-unanimous approval.

He also acknowledged that former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, had initially suggested the idea two months earlier, a proposal that gained strong traction among party leadership.

The endorsement follows a resolution by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) on June 17, 2025, officially scheduling the presidential primaries for January 31, 2026.
