Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has opened up about his personal journey from the entertainment industry to agriculture and now politics, highlighting his deep commitment to transforming Ghana's agricultural sector.
Speaking at the Citi Business Forum held on the theme Harnessing Agribusiness for Economic Growth: Expanding Ghana's Agribusiness Frontiers, in Accra on Thursday June 19, he reflected on the motivations behind his transition, describing his path as one driven by a strong belief in the power of transformation and the need for policies that support farmers. "My journey from film to farm to politics has been very deeply rooted in my firm belief in the transformation of power," he said. "Some will ask, why politics?
But at a point in time, you realise that when you are a farmer, you need certain policies to shape the sector and make farming better." Dumelo, a well-known actor turned farmer and now a public servant, emphasised that one of his core reasons for entering politics was to champion the cause of farmers and promote agriculture as a viable and attractive path for young people. "One of the reasons I entered politics is also to be able to make farming very great again - and to make farming sexy for the young ones," he stated.
As Deputy Minister, Dumelo has been vocal about youth participation in agriculture, advocating for modern farming techniques, irrigation infrastructure, and agribusiness development as key strategies to rejuvenate the sector.
